Absolutely, they can be. A cornered mustang that has no where to flee will come after you and try to do anything it can to get you out of the way to freedom. There's a reason why wild mustangs are put through chutes very similar to what cattle are put through, it's because of their wild nature and powerful fear of humans.

Anybody who is new to horses and wants to own or adopt a wild mustang should seriously reconsider their decision. The reason is that they will have no idea what they will be getting into nor how to handle or tame such a potentially dangerous animal. Taming mustangs should ONLY be for those horse people who have a lot of experience training and handling horses of all sorts of personalities.

this really depends on where you are, what the herd and environment are like, and in what kind of situation you encounter the horses. for example, mustangs are not the only wild horses. The are wild spanish ponies on Assateague Island off the east coast of the US, wild spanish Andalusians on Paine's Prairie in gainesville Fl, and wild horses on Cumberland island just off the southern Georgia coast. i have experienced the horses on Cumberland and they are so used to tourists you can stand five feet away or they'll walk right past you with out a care. all visitors to the island though are advised no to attempt to feed or ride them as they are wild. I've been in with some shire mares in a pasture (shires are called the gentle giants of horses) and that was nerving because they were not handled much and were protective of their foals. The young stallions however were completely gentle and harmless. in other cases a stallion protecting his mares or wild herd could be aggressive. if horses in general were an aggressive animal we would not have domesticated them and brought them into our hearts and homes as we have. horses are prey animals in the wild and it is their instinct to defend themselves, their heard, or their young that would create any aggression. the other time they may be dangerous in the wild is if you were to get in front of a stampede. my horses have always run around me so i just stand still so they can do so, but if i were out west and got in front of a group of mustangs on the move, i'd head for the nearest large boulder to stand on or duck behind, or a tree to stand behind

Mustangs can be both. Usually, once or twice a year, in certain parts of the United States of America and Canada, they do round ups and capture many herds of wild horses. Usually then do they sell them off at auctions and are trained to be ridden.

The danger to wild mustangs comes in the form of political decisions rather than environmental issues. In the U.S., most live on public lands managed by the Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management (BLM). These lands must be shared with other users such as livestock ranchers, mining entities, renewable energy sources and more.

Many in the livestock industry resent sharing forage and water with wild horses . The industry has historically lobbied Congress to keep wild horse number low and , in some cases, to get rid of them altogether. Wildlife organizations view mustangs as non-indigenous though recent science has proven otherwise. The position of these organizations is that the mustangs must go. Our country's need for renewable energy sources further expands the amount of public lands to be used for that purpose.

The prevailing attitude is , "Move over mustang. You're in my pocketbook."

All of these things put tremendous pressure on the BLM to remove mustangs from the wild. In their zest to do so, many herd management areas have fallen below genetically viable numbers.
