According to Vatican historians who had access to the Vatican Secret Archives and some documents within the Apostolic Penitentiary and according to the oral traditions of the Early Churches located in the Middle East and Asia Minor, there are certain families or houses typically known to have blood descent from certain Apostles of Jesus.

For example, the surname Andraos is attributed to Andrew (Andraos = Andrew), the surname Semaan is attributed to Simon Peter (Semaan = Simon), the surname Matta is attributed to Matthew (Matta = Matthew), the surname Hanna is attributed to John (Youhanna = Hanna = John), and the same applies to the rest of the Apostles.

Generally, these families are still Christian today, and they reside mostly in the Levant, the region covering Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and parts of Turkey.

They belong to Churches such as the Greek Orthodox (Antioch), the Melkite Greek Catholic (Antioch), the Syriac Orthodox (Antioch), and the Syriac Catholic (Antioch).
