Doctors will tell you some of the above answers but it depends upon what is causing the pimple. If its caused by blocked pores (i.e. blackheads, whiteheads) you can only get rid of them by excising the blockage. This is best done by opening the skin over the top of the blockage with a sterilized pin and gently forcing the blockage out. After the pore is empty, clean it thoroughly with soap, water, and following up with dabbing the area with rubbing alcohol.
If it is caused by acne, this is a very specific type of pimple that is treated best by dermatologists.
If its just adolescent breakouts, I know when I was a teenager I would excise what I could of both types of pimples (the blackhead/whitehead kind as well as the infected pus-filled type), and then follow up with soap and water and lastly, run over the surface with a cotton ball dipped in a mixture of 1/2 regular laundry type bleach and water. I know this info would make a doctor cringe, but it sure worked for me!
Another thing that works well is to do what I like to call "home-made simple dermabrasion". I always washed my face gently with soap using one of those sponges that you wash pots and pans with that have the gentle abrasive side. NOT a metal one, NOT a plastic scrubber....the sponges with one rough side. Use the rough side. GENTLY, but as vigorously as you can stand it without causing damage to the skin or making it hurt.
