IS MEDITATIONHARMFUL? Meditation is a state of being. It is a stage. As a rule you have to finish, primary, secondary and college training before you take up the study or research of Ph D. Meditation is like PhD. You can not bypass holistic solutions in the field of health, education, agriculture, education, industry, environment etc, which are like school and college. What we practice under the guise of "meditation" in absence of such solutions is a schizoid and unknowingly hypocritical activity of trying to convince ourselves and others that we are happy and peaceful when in fact we are NOT! I have seen people being in agony and miserable in the process. Meditation is an evolved state of being and inevitably happens, in the process of active efforts to implement holistic solutions to individual and social problems, which is what TOTAL STRESS MANAGEMENT or SUPERLIVING is. The practice of NAMASMARAN is a core of TOTAL STRESS MANAGEMENT or SUPERLIVING. The validity of this statement can be verified through your experience if you are keen to do so.

I would say there are not side effects to meditation, although many things happen when you start to meditate. Some of these things are judged by the mind as "good:" you may find a certain calm, a certain relaxation begin to happen to you. Other things might be construed by the mind as "bad" or "difficult:" perhaps you begin to feel more "negative" emotions like anger or sadness.

While one may begin meditating on one's own, it is my opinion that if one continues, it is a good idea to work with a mentor, teacher or "transformer." A person who has years of experience meditating. This way, as various new experiences come up, you will have a guide who has been there who can help you along the path.

Before trying to know the harm that meditation can cause, we must know some facts about meditation.

1. Hinduism is based on Vedic meditation. This fact should make it very clear that meditation can change our life completely

2. The skeletal muscular system is the one and only system in our body that we can feel and control. Thus, we meditate with our muscular system and not with our brain

3. In meditation we manipulate seven kinds of thinking. However, in our life we use only reasoning, which is meant for use in a crisis only. Thus, we can't know the harm meditation does through reasoning.

THE HARM MEDITATION CAN DO

1. Meditation involves isometric contraction (hardening) of muscles and relaxation (softening) for prolonged periods. Thus, many practitioners of meditation end up having permanent excruciating aches and pains

2. No one knows how meditation works. Even if a master does know he can't monitor it because meditation involves no movements. If our muscular system is hardened towards our head, we become more active and if we harden it towards our feet we become dreamy. Thus, meditation can make us obsessive and compulsive.

3. If our skeletal muscular system is hardened towards a point below our feet we become exaggeratedly inactive, which is considered as deep meditation. This makes us totally withdrawn from the society.

4. By definition, meditation is the process of manipulating our thinking. In fact, it is the mechanism of resetting our thinking process. If we do it improperly it can devastate our life completely.

5. Except Vedic meditation, meditation shows us a simple way of sovling our problems. Thus, it prevents us from facing our real world problems directly.

6. Meditation, done improperly and in extreme form, can cause all the mental disorders. We don't blame meditation because we don't know how to. The belief that mental disorders are caused by abnormalities of brain takes the blame away from meditation.

7. Improper and extreme form of meditation can cause physical diseases also as it can alter all body functions.

It should be mentioned here that Yoga evolved from Vedic meditation and is well known to improve physical health.

Thus, improperly done, meditation can devastate our body and mind completely. We just don't know how to put the blame on it.
