Small to medium size hammerheads like Sphyrna lewini are very common in Algarve sea waters.
This hammerhead shark species was my only encounter with a shark during my amateur diver activity in Algarve.
It was rather large, bigger than myself, perhaps 2 meters long, and he swimmed slowly around me, curious and keeping distance.
Useless to say I carefully get back to my father's boat, which was anchored about 5 miles from the coastline, in front of Tavira city.
However, there is no shark attack ever registered in Algarve's waters.

∙ 10y agoYes, there are Great White Sharks off Portugal, but they are rarely seen or caught by fishermen and almost never approach the portuguese shore.
The Mediterranean Sea is a natural habitat for great whites, and Algarve's warm sea water is a reason for the presence of white sharks, but far from the coastline and in transit from the colder Atlantic Ocean to the warmer Mediterranean sea.
There is no shark attack ever registered in Algarve's sea water.
