It depends on your religion. Many religions, such as Roman Catholicism, intrepret The Bible in a spiritual sense. Others do not, and take everything at face value. In the time when the Bible was written, stories were the main source of entertainment for people. Often things were written in a poetic nature, using words that don't always mean exactly what their definitions say. I will give an example. In the creation story, the Bible says that the world was created in 6 days, and on the seventh day God rested. Scientists say that this is impossible, giving evidence that the world took many milions of years to be created. If we look at the word "days" as meaning not 24 hours, but as periods of time, then this does not contrast with science. The first, the planets and stars were created, and with them earth and all its features, and light and darkness. The second day, the oceans were created. Science says that oceans formed after the earth was formed. Then, life. Plants and such were introduced to earth. Science says that plants were the first forms of complex life on earth. Continuing, the oceans were filled with fish and other aquatic life on the fourth day. Science says that fish succeeded plants as the dominant species. The fifth day brought about animals, creatures, and such, which science proves to have come after fish. The sixth day, humans were called into existence. Does science not dictate that humans evolved from animals? The seventh day, rest. Evolution for humans seems to have paused, as we are not currently becoming a different species, are we? Again, it is your choice whether to take the Bible literally, or not. My suggestion would be to interpret the Bible as best you can. Doubt everything. Without doubt, there can be no enlightenment.

Why do Jehovah's Witnesses take everything literally?

Jehovah's Witnesses do not take everything literally. In bible interpretation as well as in everyday life Jehovah's Witnesses are aware of (and recognise) metaphor, similies, symbolism as well as the non literal nature of the lanugage of many visions, dreams and prophecies. They believe the bible contains examples of all the above but that it remains the word of God.

Why are some of the most evil people in the world Christians?

Because they are the people who use the Bible and its teachings and ether take them too literally or distort them and use them as a propaganda tool. This goes to show that The Holy Bible should not be taken too literally, and to take its teachings as ones of love, tolerance, and belonging.

Where does it say in the bible about transubstantiation?

The bible does not discuss "transubstantiation." It is a theological view of the catholics. They take the idea from Matthew 26:26 where Jesus gave them bread saying "this is my body." They take that idea literally where protestants tend to take it as a symbol of his body.

What is one reason a Catholic may find the Bible hard to understand?

One reason that a Catholic might find the Bible hard to understand is that they are not reading it with the mind of the Church. Another reason might be that they don't understand that it is literal and NOT literalistic. In other words, take the Creation story in the beginning of Genesis (the first creation story). It is literally true: God created EVERYTHING out of nothing. A literalistic interpretation would be that He created it in six twenty-four hour days because it references "days". But the Bible is NOT literalistic, and must be interpreted literally in the genera that it is using: myth, parable, allegory, etc.

How does one learn to take the book of Genesis literally?

Taking books of the bible literally is not exactly a learned art. The book of Genesis is one of the most widely taught books in churches and Christians are usually told by their church leaders that it is a literally written book, so it should be taken so. It is easiest to do if you are raised in church.
