it actually takes as long as as it takes you to run,
ive started training for a month now as im joining the ROYAL AIR FORCE Regiment as a gunner, which requires high physical fitness.
my first 3 mile run took 30 mins approx plus walking a bit.
i joined the gym and did excercises on the bike and a bit of running machines but not treadmill as i find it hard to get motivated to carry on.
i cycled nearly 10 miles in 30 mins twice a week, plus 20 mins on various types of running machines twice a week, and also a easy 3 mile run on the weekends.
every 2 weeks id try to get a best time on a 3 mile run. which i was ending up knocking minutes off.
my current best time as of 23/02/2010 is 19minutes.
but im hoping of reaching a target of 17 minutes.
keep working hard to reach targets.
and remember NO PAIN, NO GAIN
The average time for an average person to run 3 miles is around 30-35 minutes. However, this can vary greatly depending on individual fitness level, experience, and running pace.

Is there an "average sprinting speed" for humans? The world record for the 100 metres was set by the Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt (who was slowing up at the tape and not running "through" it as he should have!). Bolt was running a little over 23 miles per hour averaged though that distance. If you look at sprinters across the college ranks, a bit over 20 miles per hour would be a good average.
The average person will travel less than 600 miles per year. This is because most people do not have to fly.
Average walking speed for an adult is around 4 miles per hour.
