The 1,780-pound, world record tiger shark was caught in 1964 by Walter Maxwell from the Cherry Grove Pier in Cherry Grove, SC which is north of Myrtle Beach, SC. It remains to this day the only all tackle world record ever caught in South Carolina. The shark is estimated to have weighed in at 2,000 lbs when it was caught, but it was not weighed until the next day when it could be trucked to Loris and placed on the scales.

Mr Maxwell's shark is the largest tiger shark caught on hook and line. Tiger sharks of nearly 20 feet have been recorded from Australia and Hawaii. The shark Maxwell caught was only fourteen feet five inches.

The fastest Shark is actually the Shortfin Mako Shark. They have been reported to swim at 50kph (31mph). They are more streamlined than the Great White.

Great Whites can attack at very fast speeds shooting up from the ocean floor but their top speed is 24.14 (15mph).

richlee2000's answer: not exactly. great whites can go faster then 31mph (50kph) in cold water because they are a cold blooded species. but not all cold blooded animals move quicker in cold water. :)
