It depends on how you understand the question. There are three ways to read it: Whether African Jews are real Jews, whether the original Jews / Ancient Israelites were Black, or whether the Blacks of the Americas are the real Jews - as claimed by the Black Israelite Churches - instead of the Semitic people that most refer to as "Jews".

African Jewry

If the question is asking whether or not African Jews are just as "legitimate" as Jews as European Jews or Middle Eastern Jews, the answer is yes. Today, in the 21st Century, in spite of some medieval outmoded but tenacious beliefs on the part of their 'neighbors', real Jews of every color exist, and were found living in some 135 countries as of mid-2009. The simple fact is that black Jews are recognized and acknowledged by other Jews. This is especially true as concerns the Ethiopian Jews, the Lemba Jews of South Africa/Lesotho, and the Converts of Uganda.

The only major issue that has ever been presented as concerns Black Jews (which was also presented concerning Indian Jews, Chinese Jews, and Yemeni Jews) is whether the amount of Halakha observed and known in these communities is sufficient to call them Jews. A second smaller issue is whether Jews who allege that they converted to other religions centuries ago and wish to convert back actually believe in the religion or if they just want a better life in Israel. (This has become an increasing problem with the Felasha Mura in Ethiopia who are currently Christians.)

Coloration of Ancient Israelites (Jewish Ancestors)

If the question is asking what the color was of the first Jews / Ancient Israelites, the answer is as follows:

The first ancient Jews 3,000 to 4,000 years ago, were a Semitic people (a dark type of Caucasian) from the Eastern Mediterranean, the same as the ancestors of the Syrians, Lebanese, and Arabs. People of this area have mainly Caucasian features. The Ancient Bible (however historically accurate it might be) often describes Jews as ruddy (reddish skin) with Black or Red hair. People with Jewish ancestry tend to have mainly white ancestry.

The ancient Israelites were not dark-skinned. This is stated in Song of Songs 1:6, which says that any darkness of their complexion was from being suntanned. As has been conclusively shown from DNA analysis of Jewish communities around the world, today's Jews are the descendants of their ancient namesake (with an admixture of people who have converted). The large majority of Jews today are of light-to-medium skin tone.

Black Israelite Churches

As concerns the prevalent Black Creation Stories of the Israelite Church, most Biblical Scholars believe that the Hebrews who left Egypt went to what is now Israel and became the Israelite nation there. Almost no reputable scholar claims that the Hebrews left Egypt and arrived in West Central Africa where they were deported to the Americas and then developed into twelve tribes. The idea has no basis in facts of any sort and even the Biblical verses that they typically use to support their contention are quote-mined or half-quoted to give an impression of the meaning extrinsic to the context.

There are Jews who are Black, but to state flatly that all Blacks are the real Jews and non-Blacks are not is racist. Jewish tradition has allowed for conversion, all the way back to Moses (who married a Midianite woman) and Ruth (the ancestor of King David). It's pretty clear that today's racial categories didn't apply in the times of the ancient Israelites. If you wonder about the skin color of ancient Israelites, it was probably comparable to what you'll find in the Kurds of northern Iraq and Syria or the Bedouins of the Negev. That puts them squarely in the middle between modern racial categories that define everything in terms of Black and White.
