Usually that would be caused by a faulty brake light switch connected TO the brake pedal. If the brakes work the pedal is probably ok.

What would make the brake lights work on a 2000 dodge 1500 van?

If you mean the brake lights are stuck on, then check the stoplight switch located on the top of the brake pedal.

What causes the brake light to come on 2000chevy blazer?

Usually in every vehicle the brake lights come on when the brake pedal is pushed in. There is a switch connected to the pedal in some way to make the light switch on.

If the switch activated by your brake for your 1994 Nissan sentra brake lights and tail lights is broken and your lights stay on when the engine is off how can you fix it?

There is a switch just above the brake pedal that is called the brake stoplight switch. When the brake pedal is released, it stops the brake lights from illuminating. Check to make sure the switch is contacting the brake pedal stop where it should. A short term method of not killing the battery would be to unplug the connector to the switch and get a new one. It won't have brake lights when disconnected so I don't recommend driving with it like that. replace the broken switch

Why does the brake light stay on without using the brake pedal 07 Pontiac G6?

Brake Light Failure to Turn OffThe most common cause for brake lights to remain ON when the pedal is not depressed as that the brake light switch is not properly adjusted.IF the brake light switch is definitely good [working properly] then the most likely cause for the brake lights to remain turned on is that the position of the switch [the distance of the plunger tip from the brake pedal arm] is not adjusted properly. Most mechanical type switches are adjusted by screwing the switch [which has a threaded mounting to a hole in the mounting bracket] either toward or away from the brake pedal arm [which depresses the switch plunger to turn off the brake lights].It is immeasurably helpful to have an assistant stand behind the vehicle to observe and report the changes [on-off, etc.] as you make adjustments of the switch position. You should continue to make changes in the adjustment until the brake lights stay OFF when the brake pedal is not depressed, and the brake lights come on when the pedal is depressed.

Why won't a mercury mystique go out of park but starts?

Make sure that the brake pedal is pressed down or else it won't shift out of park. If you are pressing the pedal and still no action then make sure that the brake lights are turning on as maybe a fuse or an electrical component letting the trannsmission know that you are holding the brake may be faulty. Why would the brake lights be stuck on on a 1998 Ford Contour?

It is because the switch on brake pedal has been moved. It must be pushed by the pedal all the time, and when you push the brake pedal, the button switch comes out, and then you should turn your lights on. This switch is tight by double nut next to the pedal, so disconnect it, release the tightened nut, or verify that it is tight, make sure it is pushed by the pedal every time this one is up, make a turn if needed to make tight again.

What would make the two regular brake lights go out even though the rear window brake light is working?

Why does your tail lights stay on?

you most likely have a faulty brake switch. depending on what make/model you are running, they are usually found above the brake pedal and behind the brake pedal mounting arm...typically cheap and easy to replace.

You have no brake lights on your 1998 cadillac catera All fuses are good everything else works What else can cause this?

Check to make sure you have power at the brake light switch, if you have power at the switch, depress the brake pedal, and check for power out of the switch, if no power out with the brake pedal depressed, you need a new brake pedal switch.

The brake light on your 1994 subaru Impreza wrx sti is on permantly why is this?

Check your brake light switch located above the brake pedal. Check to make sure that the brake pedal rests against the switch. When the brake pedal is depressed than the lights should turn on, but when you let go of it, it should return up and meet with the switch.
