Yes, chickens are cannibals!!! They are attracted to blood. If a hen lays too big of an egg causing the skin to bleed a bit, another chicken may peck at it. This will draw more blood & full blown cannibalism might occur. Even if a chicken doesn't do the original pecking, others will join in. Once they get a taste for blood they may arbitrarily peck another chickens "butt" or on the back by the oil sac to get the blood drawn. A carcass can be pecked clean in a matter of a few hours, depending on the size of the flock, leaving only bones and feathers behind. My neighbors flock was halved last summer because of this. The crisis was solved by providing: A: An abundance (2 bushel per 60 birds) of cabbage, collard, beet, carrot leaves, post-halloween pumpkins etc. B: A pan or shallow box that holds the equivalent of a 3 gallon bucket of dirt for free scratch. C: 1 gallons worth of scratch wheat. D: Two cups of oyster shells -a given for hens and two cups of diatomaceous earth- aka fossil shell flour, mixed thoroughly into a 5 gallon bucket that is poured over into a hanging/suspended feeder. E: Fresh water daily. This may not help everyone, although it worked for them. Note-- the replacement chicks for this flock were bought from the hatchery tip de-beaked to avoid future cannibalism. They can eat laying MASH, but not their fellow chicken(:-).

Yes, but this would be frowned upon in the chicken society.

This would be cannibalism.

Don't let your chickens harm one another. You will lose profit!

Chickens only lay eggs. Baby chickens (chicks) hatch from those eggs and grow up. If the eggs are not fertilized, however, then they will not hatch. Those are the ones that are eaten.

Chickens lay eggs all the time, but these are not usually fertilised. When a cockerel mates with a hen, the eggs become fertilised and then, if the hen sits on them or if they are incubated, chicks will hatch.

Not at all. Chickens do not need to mate to lay eggs, but they must mate in order for these eggs to be fertile, i.e. able to hatch into chicks.

Can animals lay egg without matting?

Yes, chickens for example, lay eggs without mating. That is where we get eggs for eating. The eggs sold in stores are not fertilized and can never hatch and become chickens.
