I would edit your question to include make, model, year, type of transmission and mileage, first of all. Also, I'm not well-enough versed on transmissions or cars in general, but I have had stellar results by posting my car questions on the cartalk.com forum for "car questions". A lot of very experienced people are there and are happy to help you out. Good luck!
No. The serpentine belt controls A/C, alternator, water pump, power steering pump, and that is it. And if the belt is replaced properly, it will not cause damage to anything.
Weak transmission fluid pressure. The fluid goes bad after many miles of use. Have the transmission fluid and filter replaced (about $100) immediately before the transmission goes bad. A transmission for that car cost more than the car is worth.
I just replaced a 2001 Saturn automatic transmission for about $2500. Wasn't a salvage transmission, so it cost a good bit more.
did you changed your thermostat? You MUST keep around 195 degree thermostat in the vehicle at ALL TIMES due to the computer system. The ignition module usually gets hot due to corroded electrical connections at the ignition module and or the module is HEAT SENSITIVE and needs to be replaced. (plug wires) Ignition misfire can produce a variety of driveability symptoms including hard starting, rough idle, hesitation....
i have a 98' Pontiac grand prix gtp. i got the 2 serpentine belts replaced for $200.
There is a spring loaded tensioner that is supposed to keep the serpentine tight. If it is loose, it needs to be replaced.
Look on the back side of the serpentine belt (the side of the belt with the ribs). If any of the ribs are cracked the belt should be replaced. Take a look at the physical condition. If it is cracked on the inside (groove or V side) it needs to be replaced.
I recently replaced my tensioner using this web page. It does include a diagram for routing the serpentine belt that I also replaced.. Hope this helps! http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1138497
You don't, it has a spring loaded tensioner, If the serpentine belt is loose the tensioner has failed and needs to be replaced
if it is cracking exesively
Its automatic until needing replaced
sounds more like transmission slipping diff slipping would cause loud grinding or howling noise
