The US doesn't recognize common-law relationships in the same way that Canada does. As far US law is concerned, you're talking about your room mate or a friend. He can certainly try to get a work visa, but your relationship has nothing to do with it. In US law, he's single. If you were to get legally married, the situation would change somewhat.
