yes if the proper weight
Depends on what it is, and whether it's mineral, semi-synthetic, or full synthetic. There isn't one oil which is used universally for all transfer cases. For the most part, you can expect to pay $4 - $10 per quart, depending on what exactly it is.
In a Jeep its ATF+4. Some sources have used 5W-30 Synthetic motor oil with good results.
Buy a transfer case either used or rebuilt that is correct for the vehical. Depending on options exterior items may need changing, but no diasembly of the case will be needed. Do not buy a "231D" transfer case. These were used on several diferent manufacturers and have profound difrences that will be a nightmare. It is actually fairly straight forward if you purchase the right part.

Transfer box is probably a misnomer for a transfer case ... a gearbox that delivers power to a second axle in addition to the axle that "normally" delivers the power to the wheels. In a typical four wheel vehicle, the transfer case delivers power to the front wheels in addition to the standard power delivery to the rear wheels, in the case of trucks or older SUVs. In a passenger car, the standard is front wheel drive, so a transfer case might be used to deliver power to the rear wheels. In either case, the vehicle is being reconfigured from two wheel drive to four wheel drive, by engaging ... or disengaging ... the transfer case. In all wheel drive vehicles, the transfer is happening all the time.
A transfer case is used on an all wheel drive vehicle , or a 4X4 vehicle , and is bolted to the rear of the transmission If you mean the transaxle ( transmission ) on a 2004 Mercury Sable it is bolted to the engine inside the engine compartment ( on the drivers side )
Your transfer case is supposed to be filled with dexron III mercon for that year. The older transfer cases used gl-4 or gl-5 gear lube or 30 weight motor oil but the new process(yours) uses tranny fluid.
Part time is the type of four wheel drive where the front and rear axles are directly locked together in the transfer case. It is meant to be used "part of the time". such as on ice or mud. Full time has a gear set in the transfer case that allows the front and rear to turn at different speeds. It can be used "full time" or all the time.
To transfer power from the pedals to where it can be used - the rear wheel.
Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid is used in the transfer case
A differential in an automobile is used to transfer the power to rear drive axles from the transmission in rear wheel drive vehicles. In 4-wheel drive, the two differentials transfer power from the transfer case to the wheels. Most front wheel drive vehicles use a transaxle which combines a transmission and differential in the same case. Again, one of the roles is to transfer power to the wheels. However, it does more than that. It allows one wheel in the set to turn faster than the other. That is so the vehicle can negotiate curves without skidding.
Depending on what transfer case is used, most of the time, yes they will fit.
