short answer: yes.
the oil pump o ring can wear out, especially in older cars.
Oil pump driveshaft (also referred to as distributor) o-ring is bad. Replace, and oil will stop leaking there.
Is the oil leaking and hitting exhaust? if so it is the o-ring in the oil pump. Subaru is known for that!
In most model years, the high pressure oil pump is located under the intake manifold. Therefore, the first step is removing the intake manifold in order to access the pump. Undo the cover bolts and remove the high pressure oil pump, remove and discard all gaskets, seals and O rings. Replace the lower O ring seal, then the high pressure oil pump and bolts. Install the main oil pressure pump O ring seal, then the discharge pipe and bolts. Tighten all bolts to factory specifications. Install a new D ring seal on the discharge pipe and a new gasket on the oil pressure pump cover. Then replace the pressure pump cover and bolts.
Assuming you know how to remove everything to get to the oil pump. Insert o ring insert the splined round tube over the crank shaft install d ring gasket insert gears ( dont matter how you line them up) install oil pump to timing cover torque down
There is a pipe that goes into the pump. Put the 'O' ring on the pipe and push in
after removing the reservoir gently pry out the old pump and lube the o-ring for the new one with lite oil
It is mounted on the outside of the engine block, in front of the crankshaft. It is driven by the crankshaft. It is behind a cover, and is very difficult to access. There is an O-ring between the crankshaft and the oil pump, and oil leaks in this area are frequently caused by failure of the O-ring, and not by failure of the oil pump itself. HOWEVER, removing the oil pump - whether to replace it or simply replace the O-ring - is a very complicated and time-consuming process, that requires the removal of a couple of covers (including the timing belt) and also hoisting the engine... about 17 hours labor, which translates to $2000++ just in labor, even at a cut-rate shop. So if it's only leaking oil, and you don't see the oil pressure light coming on, you're probably better off just buying a drip pan and topping-off the oil !
NO you do not. That is what the o-ring is for. If you use sealer it will wind up in the oil and that is Not good.
which O ring? there are quite a few in the 98 monte.
No it will work either way.
They can leak at the valve covers. Also there is a little O ring on the distributer that seems to go bad and can cause a lot of oil leakage on that side of the motor. The power steering pump can also leak. I have seen the O ring to be a very common problem and makes a pretty consistent mess on the topside of the motor.
yes there are 2 o-ring gaskets against the engine block where the oil filter housing attaches.
