A neurologist is a physician who has completed specialty training in neurology (the study of nerves and the nervous system). Neurologists perform examinations, order various laboratory and diagnostic tests and treat various neurologic disorders with medications. A neurosurgeon is a physician who has completed surgical specialization in neurologic surgery. Neurosurgeons may perform surgery on the brain, spinal cord, vertebral column, peripheral nerves, or may place monitors or drains into the brain or ventricles.

A clinical neurophysiologist is trained to monitor the patient's central and peripheral nervous system and can diagnose abnormalities in patterns of electrical signaling. They will work alongside neurologists and neurosurgeons. A clinical neurophysiologist wont necessarily have to be medically qualified. A neurologist on the other hand is a specialist physician trained to diagnose and treat organic nervous system disorders.

A neurosurgeon is a surgeon by training. One has to complete a 6 or 7 years of training after medical school to become a neurosurgeon. They later can subspecialize in spine surgery, brain tumor, skull base surgery, etc. For most part they only treat surgically treatable diseases.

A neurologist, is not a surgeon by training, they diagnose and treat a variety of neurological conditions such as epilepsy, brain tumor, troke, dementia, headache, Back pain, etc. Some of these conditions can be treated surgically, hence we send them to our neurosurgeon colleagues. The training requires four years of post graduate internship and residency. After which, one may choose to subspecialize, dementia, epilepsy, neuromuscular diseases, stroke, movement disorders, etc.

Is a neurologist able to prescribe medicine?

Yes, but you're better off either going to a Neurosurgeon or a Pain Specialist, and of those 2 a Pain Specialist is the preferred option depending on the type of pain. If you've not been diagnosed yet, then see the Neurosurgeon first - he'll do an MRI or CT and give you a better diagnosis than a Neurologist will as they deal with most back problems on a regular basis. It doesn't make any difference if you don't want or need surgery - the point is to get the best diagnosis in the beginning. Stay away from Orthopedists - bone doctors don't know anything when it comes to spinal nerve issues. TSD -RAVEN- - Category Supervisor
