I'm going to presume that it already had a liner in it once before.. there are only a few systems like you are describing. One is a stainless steel wall and concrete bottom (.claytonlambert), and the other is a (onlyevolution) composite (not polymer though) wall system that is painted with a painted concrete bottom. I think there is a company called Swimcrete as well.. but, either way, if you wanted to drop in a liner, you'd need to have some sort of coping or beadtrac around the top. If you could post a picture it would be helpful!
The answer is "absolutely not"! The liner folks will be happy to sell you a liner, but it will not last 2 years. A hybrid pool lacks the required 'concrete receptor coping' installed in all vinyl liner pool installations. The required concrete receptor coping is extremely strong and contains what is known as a 'bead receptor'. All vinyl liners are manufactured with a 'bead' around the top of the liner. Obviously, at installation the bead is inserted into the bead receptor enabling the liner to support well over a hundred thousand (100,000) pounds of water. Even a small vinyl liner pool, 16x32, holds about 125,000 pounds of water.
The vinyl liner salesmen, those without ethics, will nail a track into the top of the polymer wall, then screw the liner into the track. In other words, the 20mil liner with screw holes is expected to hold at least 125,000 pounds. As soon as the ground settles, even a little bit, the liner tears and you're out thousands of dollars. Better is resurface the walls with swimming pool gelcoat.

For Los Angeles I take the low temp for the night plus the high temp for the day add them then and divide by 2. For the summer I add 3 degrees and for the winter I subtract 3. That usually pegs it pretty close. Also for a dark bottom pool I add an additional 3 degrees during summer. Not scientific but it generally gets it pretty close. For instance today it was 83 during the day and 64 last night so 83+64/2=73.5 + 3=76.5 and 79.5 for darker bottom pools. Depth, color, and amount of sun that hits the pool all change things. Oh this is for inground pools.

Concrete (not gunite) is superior to any other wall, but a pool with concrete walls generally also has a concrete bottom. In other words, it is a concrete swimming pool. The most popular wall today for vinyl liner pools is fiberglass and, with the possible exception of concrete, is the best possible choice.
