Look under the vehicle. If there is a drive shaft going from the front half of the vehicle to the back half of the vehicle then it is AWD. If no drive shaft then it is FWD. If you're still not sure after looking at it take it to a shop, they will tell you for free.
They are not the same, the awd drive has a center differential and an output shaft and transfer case to drive the rear wheels. They are not the same, the awd drive has a center differential and an output shaft and transfer case to drive the rear wheels.
The easiest way is to look under the body of the Rendezvous and see if there is a drive shaft connected to a transfer case on the rear wheels. If there's no drive shaft, it's FWD, if there's a shaft, it's AWD.
AWD = All Wheel Drive FWD = Front Wheel Drive
If your vehicle is All wheel drive you don't unless you drop the front drive shaft, but don't my 1999 is AWD it has saved me numerous times.

AWD car usually have badges saying so on the trunk (audi quatto, bmw xi/x drive)If the car has front axles only it FWD, if it has half shaft in the rear also it is awd. The owner's manual should say also.
It may depend on whether the vehicle is a 2WD or an AWD (All Wheel Drive) model. If 2WD, all you have to do is get the front wheels off the ground. If it is an AWD, you will have to get it on a flatbed UNLESS (in addition to getting the front wheels off the ground) the tow truck driver will have to disconnect drive shaft to the rear differential.

Model Year, 2WD or AWD, And if it is AWD or a 2WD(Front Left-Half shaft) is it your inner or outer? If it is you will need to replace the half-shaft as the inner cv cannot be disassembled.
