you could fix the problem yourself but why do that when you can take it to a dealer and have it fixed correctly for free? plus when you want to sell your van it will not show up as the van having a recall cause the dealership will add your VIN to the database as fixed.

Yes you can - and by all reports it is an easy fix with the part being around $25-30.

Basically unscrew the brake pressure switch from the bottom of the master cylinder and screw the new one on. There is also a modified wiring harness that many report is included with the new switch.

See "Related Questions" below for more, including a link to a terrific photo how-to tutorial on the switch replacement.

Sidebar: I haven't heard yet if Ford is offering reimbursement for those who have already had the repair done prior to the recall. I haven't received the official recall letter from Ford, although my selling dealer did send me an email notice - which didn't include lots of the details and focused more on scheduling the repair.

I may be able to offer a little more insight as to the harness end. I was a manf. eng. for Federal Mogul back in 2009 and I was responsible for designing the manufacturing process for the Ford Speed Control Jumper Harness. I was not even aware of new switch as being part of the recall. The jumper harness does not in any way fix the problem, it prevents the occurrence's of fire due to occurrence's of the problem. The problem being the leaking of the brake fluid at the brake pressure switch.

When fluid would leak in or around the switch it would reach the actual strands of the constant hot wire. Once that path was established the fluid could somewhat freely wick its was up the circuit. Escentially filling the air voids inside the wire insulation with flamible wire.

The jumper harness prevents this wicking action from resulting in a fire by adding a fuse to each of the two circuits. On each circuit there is a splice in the circuit between the fuse and the reservoir. This splice is first ultrasonicly welded, then dipped in flux, followed by a dip into a solder pot stream and finally sealed with epoxy sealant heatshrink tube. This basically creates a solid sealed mass in the circuit and thus wicking would, in theory, not be possible beyond it. To add to the protection, if you get one you'll see the harness is about 6" long. If you undid the wire loom you would discover that it uncoils to a length around 36". That much further wicking would have to occur to make it beyond the protection of the fuse.

Why does the cruise control not work on a 2000 ford expedition?

Ford Cruise Control Recall Ford Motor Company announced a massive safety recall on 1994-2002 vehicles to correct a problem that could cause the cruise control deactivation switch to overheat and create an underhood fire. * 1994-2002 Ford F-150s * 1997-2002 Ford Expeditions * 1998-2002 Lincoln Navigators * 1994-1996 Ford Broncos with factory cruise control Ford found that brake fluid could leak through the cruise deactivation switch into the cruise system's electrical components and cause corrosion. Corrosion can cause a short and keep the cruise control from working, but in some cases it can lead to a higher flow of current that can overheat and cause a fire at the switch. To repair trucks, Ford will install a jumper harness between the cruise control deactivation switch and the cruise mechanism. The harness will act as a circuit breaker and will turn off the current at the switch if the switch becomes shorted. Parts for the repair weren't available as of the recall date, so Ford asks customers to take their vehicles to dealerships to have the cruise control deactivated until the harnesses are in stock. Watch for a recall notice by mail if your vehicle is affected. You can read more details at www.genuineservice.com. Ford has added 1.2 million more vehicles to the cruise control recall. Now included are: * 1994 to 2002 F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks * 200 to 2002 Ford Excursions * 1994 to 1996 Econoline vans * 1996 to 2002 E-450 vans * 1998 Ford Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers

I received a recall notice last November for the speed control deactivation switch on my 1995 Ford Explorer ( I did a Google search and apparently the switch is powered all the time and can result in a fire if the switch leaks internally and contacts the wiring and if the switch is working properly a fused jumper wire is installed )

Speed control deactivation switch?

2002 and earlier Speed control deactivation is located on the brake master cylinder; its round and looks like some of the old oil pressure switces. These were recalled due to fire concerns. 2003 and later has this switch removed. The only connection on the master cylinder is a level switch. The Speed Contol Deactivation switch on the newer Expeditions has been relocated on the left side of the brake pedal and it contacts an "L" bracket on the brake pedal. This is a self-adjusting switch meaning, if you accidently press it in too far, the brake pedal will not depress the switch far enough to power the cruise control system. Nothing will work; the system thinks you are pressing the brake pedal, so it shuts down. To check this, disconnect the plug at the Cruise control servo on the driver's side fender well area. Check for 12 volts as pin #6 (should be a 6-pin plug with #6 pin being black with yellow stripe). If you have no volts with the key on or engine running, then deactivation switch is the target. If the switch plunger has been adjusted to far in, you may be able to pull the plunger out (should be about 1 to 1.5 inch stciking out), but more than likely you will break it trying. The newer switches have a knob on the back that will release the plunger when turned counter-clockwise. The plug on this switch is a 2-pin plug--if you are not getting 12 volts at pin 6 at the swervo, you can short the 2 pins of the cruise deactivation switch together and recheck for 12 voltas at pin 6, if the voltage is now there, then the deactivation switch is the problem. Either replace, or hope for the best trying to adjust it.
