The GED, or standard high school diploma even, doesn't have that much to do with it. What matters more is that you have been admitted to a college or university, which doesn't always require a high school diploma. You will begin the financial aid process with the FAFSA application early in the year you will start college classes. The school you will be attending and your course of study will have some bearing on the available aid. Your high school record may figure in in some cases, which will involve your GED status. Your college or university will have a financial aid office or counselor that will be a great help in the process.
As long as you complete your GED before applying to college, I think you can apply for loans or grants, but you may need to look at the instructions on the FAFSA before filling it out just to make sure. Or talk to a guidance counselor or whoever is helping you to complete your GED. ∙ 12y agoNothing will physically stop you from applying, but it likely will not be granted to you as this is a way one could get their loan discharged through false-certification. The school is supposed to check whether or not you have a GED or diploma to attend school as it is a requirement to attend and obtain loans.
