No easy answer. It depends on the outputs of the laptop and the inputs on your TV.
If you have a modern laptop with a HDMI output and a TV with an HDMI input, then you are all set. Converters can be bought fairly cheaply if one or the other has the older DVI output. Many TV's also have a "D-sub" or SVGA connector input. This is the older standard of computer monitor connection. It looks vaguely like a "D" (trapezoid) and has three rows of pins - up to 5 pins in each row.
If you have an old-as-hell TV with just the composite (yellow) jack or an S-video jack, it can still be done but you will need kind of a pricey converter - and it really won't look that good because the resolution of the TV is WAY less than a monitor would be. You'd have to downsize your screen resolution until it kind of looks like Windows 3.1 for it to be clear.
if your TV is pre-1990 and has only an RF input, you would need an antenna switch, a RF modulator, AND the unit in the paragraph above.

∙ 10y agoIn order to make this connection, you must first start by knowing what connection ports are available on both your PC/laptop (VGA, S-video, HDMI, and/or DVI) and your TV (VGA, S-video, HDMI, and/or DVI). If both have the same type of connection port than all you need is a cable to make that connection. Let's just focus on an laptop that has a VGA and a TV that has an S-video. To connect these you will need a VGA-S-video adapter. These can be found on-line and it most electronic retail stores. I found them priced at around $20..00. Second you will need an S-video cable, an audio cable and a VGA cable. The adapter should come with instructions on how to make these connections. Enjoy.
