It can be done, yes. You could even hook up a digital display which shows your RPMs, fuel efficiency, engine fault codes, etc. if you wanted. They're available.

You will need to hook up your tachometer to the coil connector. After disconnecting the throttle sensor and applying the hand brake, look for the plain black wire at the coil connector to hook it up to.

There really isn't one anymore. The instrument in the dash is just a stepper motor, which gets a signal from the PCM. You will need an adapter from a tach manufacturer to hook up any kind of aftermarket gauge.
It goes to the top wire on the coil, the one that usually has a cover over it.
The green wire from the tach goes to the negative side of the coil.
Most probably because one of the speed sensors not functioning. but the best way to know for sure is to hook up the vehicle to a scanner and it will give u a code that will point you to the right direction.
Diesel is no different than any other. Hook it to a charger either in the car or out of it.
