you can but it wont stay running if the battery is dead
If the car won't start, jump it off. While it is running, remove the positive cable from the battery. If the car dies, then your alternator is bad. If it keeps running then you may have a bad battery.
More than likely a bad alternator.
Typically you know your alternator is out when you have to jump start your car numerous times. A way you can test it is by turning on your car and while it's running discount the + terminal. If the car turns off then your alternator is bad. If the car remains in then alternator is good and possible bad battery. Hope this helps
Probably the alternator is bad. Once the jumper cables are removed, there is no source for ignition if the alternator is bad. Have it tested and replaced if necessary.
clean the battery terminals with baking soda and water. them jump it
I had a car suddenly stop while I was driving once when I was approximately 30 miles or less from home. Luckily, it stopped right at a car parts store. The man checked the battery and it was okay, so he checked the alternator and it was bad. After he jumped it, he recommended that I go straight home because the battery would just go dead again. Going that distance, I didn't have any problems, but I had been going away from home and he said he wouldn't try to get to where I was going about 10 miles up the road and then go back home.
That could be the alternator or the battery. Try jump starting your car with another car's battery. If it still does not start, it is probably the alternator. If it starts, your battery is dead.
Only when you start the car
Dead battery, car will not start
It sounds like you have a break in the wire which connects your alternator to your battery, get it checked out.
Yes, it is possible to jump start a car with a bad starter, but not for very long. The car will eventually die again. It is best to take it to an accredited mechanic and have a professional fix the starter on your car.
Only disconnect it when ready to replace the alternator. The primary function of the battery is to store electricity needed to start the car. Secondarily, it stores electricity for use powering the electrical items on the car when the engine is off. If the alternator is not producing sufficient power to run the engine, the battery takes over. Once the battery is drained of its power, the engine will stop. You can jump-start a car whose alternator is faulty but battery is connected, and the car may run for a short time before the battery dies. If there is no battery, the car will start but not stay running once the jump device or cables are disconnected.
