No,you don't have to strip the engine down to get TDC.Trace spark plug # 1 wire to the distributor.Use a black marker to mark the metal housing right under the cap of # 1.It is the very first one on the driver's side.On your harmonic balancer, there is a line that must be aligned with the "0" on your timing tab. That tab is located on the timing chain cover, above the balancer.Or on the right side of the chain cover. pull the cap off the distributor. Is the brass lip on the rotor pointing at the black mark on the housing? If not,it's not at TDC.Pull the distributor up,leaving the balancer at "0".Turn the rotor until the brass lip alignes with the mark on the housing.Put the distributor back down in the engine.Leave the hold-down clamp just loose enough to advance or retard the timing.Put cap and all wires back on and start the engine. If engine backfires through the carb, timing is 180 degrees off.Reset the engine back to "0" on the timing tab.Remove the cap again. The rotor with the brass lip should be pointing in the 9 or 10 o'clock position.Pull the distributor back up leaving the balancer at "0".Spin the rotor until the brass lip alignes with the mark on the housing.put the distributor back down in the engine.Put the hold-down,cap,and all wires back on.Now the engine is at TDC and should start.

How do you set the timing on a 1992 Honda civic?

To set timing correctly on a 1992 Honda Civic the distributor must be installed at the right angle. Install the distributor at the correct degrees to ensure the timing is set properly.

Timimg degrees on 2000 Chevy 1500 pick up?

The timing is not ajustable on that engine. It is controlled by the computer. If you have not removed the distributor / That is if it's a V-6 engine then there's no reason to worry about are to full with the timing. If you have moved the distributor the you MUST have an engine scanner to put the timing back were it belongs. The V-8 engines don't have a distributor. A timing light is the thing of the pass. There no longer used.

Where is the timing connector wire to set ignition timing on a 1999 Chevy Tahoe?

It does not have one. The timing is controlled by the computer. You must have a OBDII engine scanner to adjust the timing. If you did not have the distributor out are move it then there is no reason to adjust the timing. It is done automatically by the computer.

What is the procedure you used to set and check the ignition timing?

hook up a timing light to cylinder 1 spark plug wire. disconnect vacuum advance hose on distributor. loosen distributor hold down bolt slightly. start engine. point timing light at the balancer/pulley on the front of the engine. the flashing will make it look like the line marked on it is standing still. turn the distributor slightly until you line up the mark with the correct notches on the timing indicator on the block. tighten distributor hold down. hook up vacuum advance. when you plug the vacuum advance back in you can watch the timing advance with the light to verify that it is working. remove the timing light. The above answer is correct for distributor equipped cars with balancer timing marks using cylinder #1 refrence. This virtually all early north American built cars. All other cars have very different procedure's. Any request for this info must have year make and model to get a correct answer

When setting ignition timing on ford 302 5.0 engine does the rotor need to pointing to the number one on the distributor cap?

If you are setting the timing with a timing light then it don't matter where the rotor is pointing. But if you are putting the Distributor in then yes. When it is in, It must be pointing to #1 on cap so vaccume advance don't hit the thermostat housing when you adjust the timing with a light.

What is 85 Chevy 305 ignition control module?

Remove the distributor cap and rotor. Now looking down at the inside of the distributor at about 3 o'clock you will see an electrical part that has 2 small screws holding it in place. That part will have electrical connectors on each end of it. Unplug them and remove the 2 screws and left it out. After you replace it. You must set the timing on the engine with a timing light.

How do you adjust the timing after you install a distributor in a 1997 Chevy Tahoe 5.7L?

You must make sure you have the distributer mark aligned with mark on the intake manifold. The PCM makes all the timing adjustments. Info: The distributor is only used for the cam position, and spark distrubition.

How do you set the timig for 2002 Chevy silverado v6 after the distributor has been removed?

You must have an engine scanner to set the timing correctly.

How do you set the timing on a 1984 Chevy S-10?

If the engine is EFI you must unplug the 4 wire plug behind the distributor before starting. Then rotate the distributor while using a timing light to the correct position. If the engine is NON EFI then you must unplug the vaccum line from the distributor and adjust the same way. You should plug the line off to avoid a high idle situation as well..

What are your preliminary steps to setting the timing on a 1989 Chevy S-10 2.5L and what are the degrees of advance?

AnswerMost of the time, the steps to take to set the timing are on the catalyst sticker under the hood. But first, you must get the vehicle into base timing (usually disconnect a wire from distributor). Remove distributor hold down bolt, hook up timing light to #1 spark plug wire, start engine, and align timing mark (0°) Once this is set, reconnect the wire you had to disconnect for base timing. Timing advance will automatically set itself. if it doesn't, you have a faulty timing advance mechanism on the distributor. You can check timing advance by pointing the timing light at scale (while hooked up to #1 spark plug wire) and rev the motor. Timing marks should move up the scale. On many GM cars and trucks the wire that you disconnect is solid gray in color, it is in the wiring harness on the firewall, the wire has a black plug for separating when doing the timing.

How do you make sure the timing on the distributor is right after changing the timing chain and gear on a 1993 Chevy 350 V8?

you must know where the #1 cylinder is pull the plug then rotate crank until the piston is at the top of its stroke visually looking down the spark plug hole then pull distributor cap and see if rotor is pointing dead center to where the #1 plug wire is on the capif not pull distributor just enough to rotate rotor to that exact spot rotor will always move ahead slightly when distributor is pushed back down so adsust for this good luck 2nd answer Proving you have installed these parts correctly, using a manual, the next step is using a timing light on the timing marks on the crank. Also, there is a connector that must be disconnected in order to obtain the correct timing. Its a 4 wire connector which basically relays the info to the computer. In this process, the computer is left out, while you make a manual adjustment. When finished adjusting the timing to the proper degrees (it being 10 or 8 etc..)reconnect this connector. The computer will then maintain proper timing from there on. Again, this is only if you used a manual and correctly did the wiork. Good luck. JP

How do you set timing on 88 Chevy Silverado?

Set no. one piston top dead center, check that the distributor is pointing at one on the cap, there is a brown wire on the fire wall that must be unplugged while setting timing, start engine ,use a timing light (on the white emissions sticker on the radiator will say how many degrees) turn distributor to desired setting and tighten down dist. clamp turn off ing. then plug in brown wire. firing order is 18436572

What is the distributor position on a 1976 Dodge 360 or 318?

If you have made the mistake of removing the distributor from an engine without marking exactly where the rotor was, and where the distributor was, you have created a lot of work for yourself. First, you must get the crankshaft to Top Dead Center for the number one piston. There are timing marks on the pulley, which must line up with a pointer or mark mounted on the block. Once this is done, the distributor must be inserted into the head in such a way that the rotor will be under the number one cylinder plug wire position when the distributor is seated. This usually means having the rotor about 20 degrees offset when inserting the distributor, to allow for the worm gear to line up with the drive gear. Then, you have to turn the distributor until the lobe on the distributor shaft which opens the points is just beginning to open the points. Once this is done, the engine should start, and then will need to be timed with a timing light.

How to set timing on 1987 Dodge Dakota?

This is a very involved procedure, that is too complex to post here. Go to any auto parts store and purchase a repair manual for you ride. There you will find detailed instructions. Cost around $12 Ignition timing is not able to be adjusted from distributor as with many typical vehicles. You must remove timing belt and adjust a tooth at a time, which will not improve mileage or power. The distributor is ran from the timing belt.

Do you have to advance the timing on a 350 when a bigger carburetor is installedIf so how much?

You may need to turn your distributor a small amount, but you MUST adjust the air-fuel ratio.

1999 Chevy Tahoe 5.7L tring to set timig?

You can not set the timing with a timing light on that year engine. The timing is controlled by the PCM./ Power train control module. You must have an oBD2 engine scanner to set the timing. If the timing is off then the check engine light will be on.If you have not removed the distributor are moved it around for any reason then the engine timing is correct already. No need to adjust it. Computer does it.

How do you identify timing marks on 1969 Pontiac gto?

first get a can of brake parts cleaner spray then spray lower crank pulley locate the top dead center line etched on pulley, mark it with yellow nail polish or paint. then locate the timing scale mounted on the timing cover, the brake cleaner will allow you to read the increments on the scale find your cars timing setting then mark the degree scale on timing cover with the bright paint. to set timing you must have a timing light.hooked up to # 1 cylinder. then you must disconnect the timing advance hose that runs to the distributor. this will allow you to set base timing. you need to loosen your distributor just enough so you can turn it dont pull mounting bolt out of base of distributor, it will pop out and you will jump timing. use a 9/16 distrbutor wrench loosen half a turn and you should be able to move dist. make sur your in the shade and timing light wire are out of way of moving parts start car aim timing light at lower crank and timing scale with the paint marks you will see the line and the scale sort of like a strobe motion, move distributor untill the two lines match up turn car off tighten distributor dont forget to hook up vacuum hose. if you use premium fuel you can go a bit above factory settings more timing is more horse power as long as there is no pinging or detonation

What is the correct setting for the timing on a 1995 Chevrolet Caprice with a 5.7 L engine?

The timing should be set to Top Dead Center (TDC), but you must disconnect the electronic spark advance feature. Unfortunately, I don't know how to disconnect the spark advance. The timing chain is all that can be set. There is no way to set the timing as the distributor is not adjustable.

What is a camshaft to crankshaft position on an 1996 Chevy Tahoe?

You must have been fooling with the distributor. You MUST have an engine scanner to set the timing on that engine. That will then put the cam and crank sensors back in correlation / Time with each other.

How do you set the timing for a 1992 Mazda pick up B2000?

Like most vehicles with a settable timing. You need a timing light and a piece of chalk. The proper setting must be obtained from your manual. It will be something like 10 degrees before or after TDC(Top Dead Center). Connect timing light, mark zero degree on flywheel with chalk. You may need to spin flywheel a little and clean it off to see marks. After marking zero with chalk, start engine and allow to warm up to normal operating temp. loosen bolt holding ignition(distributor) and turn distributor and hold trigger on timing light and aim at flywheel chalk mark. Move distributor so timing light hits chalk mark exactly. Tighten distributor bolt and recheck alignment. You are done, shutoff engine and unconnect light.

How do you set timing in a 1997 Chevy Malibu 2.4l?

If you have an ignition modual instead of a distibutor cap your timing is automaticly ajusted every time you start your car. With a distributor cap you will need a timing light ,on the crank pulley there is some nocthes, with numbers you must loosen the distributor shaft there's only one bolt loosen a couple of turns .start the engin be sure to have some one hold the distributor.Once the car is started point the timing light on the bottom pulley on the marks. You will have to either turn the distributor left or right on an older car never set the timing dead on set it about 10 degrees off because of worn parts.

How do you adjust distributor on 92 deville?

This tutorial assumes that you know how to use timing light. To adjust the basic timing on any Cadillac 4.9 by rotating the distributor: 1) When the Engine is at normal operating temp, A/C off, Place Transmission in "PARK". 2) With the ignition "OFF" remove air cleaner upper housing and duct to throttle body. 3) Jumper pins A&B at the ALDL plug A/C panel should display "SET TIMING MODE". 4) Start engine, let it run at idle (less than 800 RPM) 5) Base timing should be set at 10° BTDC. If you need to adjust this, there is one 15 mm nut holding down the base of the distributor that must be loosened, it is very hard to get to without the special wrench (Kent-Moore #J29791 or Snap-On #S6134). 6) Once the timing is set, retighten the distributor hold down nut and recheck the timing. 7) Remove jumper at the ALDL plug. 8) Re-install air cleaner upper housing and duct to throttle body. All done!

How do you set timing for a 2.0 1994 hyndai sonata?

Adjusting the timing of a 1994 Hyundai Sonata requires specialized timing tools and the knowledge to use them. You need to have a timing light which is connected to the battery and number one ignition wire.
