Run a computer diagnostic test to figure out WHY it's on. Why replace a converter when the problem could be an oxygen sensor?

What often happens is the catalyst that is in the Catalytic converter Heats up and Blows out into your Muffler. My number 2 injector was bad and was flooding the engine with gas. It ran horrible. DO NOT DRIVE your vehicle if you have a flashing engine light, as you can destroy your catalytic converter. I had my injector replaced and all the O rings changed and she runs great! I had this done at the dealership. Also, if you look in your owners manual, it will tell you about this warning. If pieces of the broken cat are rattling around in there then yes. If this vehicle is a 1996 or later and the cat is broken the check engine light should be illuminated and the codes should point to a failed cat converter.

I just got my f-150 fixed with that same problem. I replaced the spark plugs and spark plug wires. The blinking check engine light is caused by excess gas coating the catalytic converter sensor. If left unfixed this will cause permanent damage to the catalytic converter.

Maybe but more likely its the other way around. Oil blowby will ruin the converter quickly. Perhaps if the check engine light was on & the engine quickly replaced then the converter would still be good. A clogged cat will just rob performance & the engine might not start. The oxygen sensors abre probably ruined from the oil blowby too.

When my jeep cherokee alternator went bad, the check engine light came on and I didnt have a clue what was going on until my volt guage was reading in the red zone. When I replaced my alternator, the light went off. So in my opinion i wouldnt consider the check engine light as a alternator light.
