Without further information (whether the noise goes away immediately or after warm-up) there are two main causes of such a (ticking) sound. One could be a valve lifter which "bleeds down" at shut off and requires some time to re-fill with oil after cold start. The other could be a cracked piston, the noise of which disappears after warm-up. Either require serious amounts of labor to repair. The lifter problem is, at worst, annoying and will not result in serious harm if not dealt with immediately. The piston problem is much more ominous. If the piston fails, it will likely result in serious engine damage which may require engine replacement. Finding the broken piston is easy. Just disable the spark plugs one at a time until the noise stops. Which ever cylinder has the firing load removed will be At Fault. Good luck J. Kline
98 Chevy new 383 block 30k, ticking noise from sounds like heads . 210k on heads;
Collapsed hydraulic lifter? - try a quart of mystery oil
Bearing noise is usually deeper and comes from farther down in the engine. Lifter noise is more of a ticking and is up in the engine heads.
Possible lifters that are bad that could explain your ticking noise. It should cost you nothing by stopping by an Auto repair shop and have them listen to your engine.
Usually it's the lifters in the engine making that noise until they become fully pressurized with oil, then they stop ticking, like on the 3 liter caravans.
The fuel injectors make the ticking noise you hear at startup, especially when the engine is cold (colder temperatures).
the ticking noise is a small exhaust leak close to the exhaust headers or exhaust pipe near the engine.
lifters
if ticking noise is in engine, u most likely have a worn hydraulic lifter. check oil for correct volume and viscocity
i was told by a Chevy serviceman that the ticking noise was coming from the fuel injectors firing.but to me it sounded more like lifters tapping or floating.
from which part of your engine is the ticking noise coming from. if is the TOP it would most likely be lifter noise.try using a thicker oil.
Try to locate the ticking noise. Is it the engine? Is it ticking when you are driving? When you are sitting still? It could be as simple as a stone stuck in yoru tire, everytime it hits the road it ticks. it could be a lifter in the engine. Try to be more specific as to where and when the ticking happens.
