try changing the filter and the trans fluid
Check your transmission.
For 1973, the idle speed for an automatic transmission is 600 rpm when choked, and 450 when warm. For a manual transmission, 900 rpm when choked, 450 when warm.
If you have an automatic transmission, check with the engine warm and running, The dip stick is located on the passenger side rear of the engine.
because the transmission didn't have IT'S fluid chanded every 25,000 miles.Answerthe automatic transmission fluid was changed and the solenoids, but it still will not change gears until the car is warm. AnswerProbably a tired/worn front pump.
hi i had the same problem, but when i changed the transmission modulater it stopped.i hope it works out for you to .good luck!!!! bigbub1216@yahoo.com
automatic? check transmission fluid, running .the check plug is behind the shift cable.should spill out when engine is warm
Check fluid level, is the vehicle warm or cold when this happens. The torque convertor may be bad. The transmission may need to be serviced (new fluid, filter, etc).
If your shifter is on the steering column, the problem is probably under the dashboard on the steering column. It is an easy fix. remove the panel under the steering column, and spray silicon lubricant on the shift lever that extends out of the column that the shift cable is attached to. 9 times out of 10 this will be the problem. Or, you could follow the other suggestions or have your transmission replaced. but at some point, you will need to lubricate this linkage to fix the problem.
Almost all automatic transmissions are filled and checked with the engine running and the transmission in Park. Be sure to let the car run for a while to warm up before checking. while filling, be sure to slowly shift the transmission through all the gears (while still sitting still, parking brake on) and recheck the level after shifting.
yes when its running and warm
Had problem with 86 Lincoln not shifting properly when cold. I assumed it was because the fluid was thicker and would be more affected by a clogged filter. I had the transmission flushed and the filter cleaned and it worked perfectly from then on.
Start with 8qts. Run it - warm it up - shift it back and forth - leave running and top it off by the stick readings.
