The Colt .45 had been recently replaced by the Long .38 which was found to have insufficient power to stop a charging Filipino, even with multiple hits. Therefore, the Colt. 45 was pulled from retirement and sent to the Philippines, and it proved more effective. When the US Army decided to adopt an autoloading pistol in the 1900's, a .45 cartridge was specified as a result of experience in that war.
