That's certainly possible. The best way to diagnose a problem like that would be to go to one an auto parts retailer such as Auto Zone, Kragen or whomever is in your area. Most provide free ignition system diagnostics in hopes that you'll buy your parts from them. They should be able to detect an alternator problem, loose belt, bad tensioner, old, tired battery or whatever your problem might be. Then you can get the parts and repair it yourself.
Usually the voltage regulator is the problem. Its located inside the alternator. More testing is needed to make sure that the regulator is the fault. If you want to guess. Replace the alternator. Sounds to me like the power steering and alternator belt has fallen off.
The current needed to operate the cooling fan(s) puts a load on the alternator which causes the idle rpm to drop a little. Have the battery and charging system tested to be sure there isn't a problem.
on my old 1.2 clio the battery light came on as there was fault with the alternator and it needed replacing. As far as i know the battery light comes on when the battery is not charging or there is a fault with the battery.
THere isn't really any connection between the alternator and the compressor except that they are both driven by the belt. The alternator generates electricity for the vehicle, and the compressor uses electricity to power the clutch that turns the compressor shaft. I can't think of any other connection. They don't actually work together as if they were part of the same system. The alternator system, and the AC system are two separate systems that do not depend on each other to function, other than the fact that the compressor uses some electricity for the clutch, but if the alternator stops charging, the car's battery would supply the voltage needed until it runs down.
Depending on where you live, you MAY be able to find a local auto parts retailer that has the ability to test your alternator. They generally test the entire charging system and do not charge for the service since they're trying to get you to buy parts from them. You're right to not trust the dealer, their mechanics are paid partially by commission and tend to want to replace as many parts as they can.

Wrong alternator or new alternator is bad. no resetting needed
The 91 LeMans has a Delco CS121 alternator. The four pins (labeled P-L-F-S) function as follows. The P terminal is connected to the stator and can generates a half-rectified voltage when the alternator is operating. The L pin is connected to the battery Light on the dash board to illuminate the indicator if the alternator is not charging the battery. The F terminal is connected to the field and can be used to drive a tachometer. The S terminal is for the remote sense. If connected, the alternator will put out whatever voltage at the terminal is needed to give 14.5 volts at wherever the end of the sense wire is connected to the wiring harness (useful where there are a lot of loads and/or voltage sensitive accessories).

The red battery warning light is an indication the charging system is not charging. The red water level warning light is an indication additional water is needed.
Solenoid or battery *Check the alternator as well. When my Camry did that, the battery and alternator both needed replacement. -andey78
