The valves are in the head of the engine. They look like a Golf tee. They open and close to let air in and the exhaust out. The oil seal is a small cup that the stem of the valve goes through to keep oil from running down the stem and into the cylinder. It is shaped like an umbrella or upside down coffee cup. They wear out over time or get hard and then the car will start to smoke. Usually when it is first started. The oil runs down the stem when it is shut off and burns when the engine is first started. There is usually not enough oil for it to show while driving.

You just replaced your head gasket on your 97 blazer and now you have oil in your carb is there anything else besides the PCV valve that would cause this?

How will a car act if the valve stem seals are bad?

If the valve stem seals are bad the intake valves will "suck" oil into the cylinders. One common indicator of worn valve stem seals is to take your foot off the accelerator for several seconds when going downhill, then watch for smoke when you step on the accelerator again. If you see a puff of BLUISH smoke, you probably have bad valve stem seals. The catalytic converter can become oil fouled so that would be another indicator that you might have valve stem seal problems.

How do you stop oil from getting into the spark plugs?

if oil is getting into spark plugs, this indicates that either the valve stem seals need replacing,or the oil rings on pistons are worn and need replacing. if valve stem seals are the problem ,the vehicle will really be blowing a lot of exhaust smoke to the extent sometimes that it will look like a smoke screen behind you

How do you know if your engine is burning the oil?

if it does not leak oil, but the oil level dropps(or you have smoke, white or blue). on these motors, the valve stem seals lie to go out, and that's cheaper than a whole rebuild. start your motor, and remove the oil fill cap. if alot of smoke starts to come out, you need a rebuild. if little or no smoke comes out, your motor is good, and you need new valve stem seals

Valve seals will usually cause smoke at start up, and much lees while running, rings will smoke badly while running, and may have issues with crankcase pressure.
