In December of 1823, US President James Monroe issued what is called the Monroe Doctrine. It was a warning that Europeans should refrain from becoming involved in what Monroe deemed to be purely American affairs in the Western Hemisphere. While the British were already in control of Canada, and the Spanish still had their colonies, the intent was that they should not become involved in areas that could be considered as new points of interest of the United States. As it turned out, later on this doctrine was ignored in several situations. The British sought influence in what was later to be California, and they also negotiated with the Republic of Texas. The latter situation ended when Texas was acquired by the US and became a State. and after the US Civil War, the French were dissuaded from their efforts of setting up a puppet regime in Mexico by sending US Federal troops on the US - Mexican border. In addition, the British lost interest in California, as well as their interest in what was the US's Pacific Northwest.
