Muslims through all their never forced people to convert to Islam. Even when Medina was under the control of prophet Muhammad all the spectrum of faiths were living together in harmony and no one forced to convert irrelevant he/she was holy book holder (the Jews and Christians) or idol believer. This is per Quran, Muslims holy book, and prophet Muhammad teachings.

Generally speaking, only Christians and Jews were allowed to continue to follow their ancestral religions, although eventually Zoroastrians and Hindus were granted the same privilege under Muslim rule. Followers of pagan and tribal religions were forcibly converted.

NO. Islam only respected Judaism and Christianity (and later Zoroastrianism and Hinduism to a lesser degree) as acceptable Non-Islam religions. Tribal religions were usually repressed and their followers forcibly converted to Islam. However, since the customs of these tribal religions were harder to eradicate than their general belief ritual, areas like Sub-Saharan Africa and Indonesia, which had a very unique set of tribal groups, developed a more syncretic form of Islam.
