Lewis Powell and Mary Surratt were picked up at her boarding house. David Herold was arrested at Garrett's farm where Booth died and George Atzerodt had been in hiding on a farm in Germantown, Maryland and was arrested on 20 April.

Everyone was in custody by the end of April except for John Surratt, Jr who was eventually taken into custody in Egypt in November of 1866. He was the only one of the co-conspirators who was tried in Civil Courts where the jury could not reach a verdict, and he was released and lived as a free man until his death at the age of 72.
