It was CS gas, which is a type of tear gas, that was used against those in tunnels in the Viet Nam conflict. It did not "suck oxygen" out of the tunnels, because there was nothing that would do that. Instead, the CS directly affected the occupants. Use the link below to learn more.

Nixon became President because he wanted to run, his political party supported him, and he won the election (with ending the Viet Nam conflict as part of his platform).
As it turns out we were involved in Viet Nam much sooner than many thought. President Eisenhower was the first to put our military personnel in Viet Nam in the late nineteen fifties. We were there until Nixon finally called it quits in the early nineteen seventies. Many believe that we were drawn into the Viet Nam conflict because of an attack by North Viet Nam on a US American ship in the Gulf of Tonken when John Kennedy was President. This attack did not occur according to a later confession by General Westmorland however it was considered necessary to lead the US American public to believe we needed to enter that conflict.
The widely accepted answer would be the Bay of Pigs. This was an attempt to infiltrate Cuba and not only ws it unsuccessful, the US got caught. It made us look incompetent. However, Kennedy also began the kind of relationship with Viet Nam which eventually led to the US involvement in that war. At the point that Kennedy died, the US probably could have extricated itself from that conflict, but President Johnson continued to dig the US deeper until we were fully engaged.
No. Really, no one won the Viet Nam conflict.
I do not believe the assassination of JFK had any influence on Folk music. Rather it was the Viet Nam war that had a direct influence on Folk Music. We did however enter the Viet Nam war under JFK. It was a country divided at the time of the Viet Nam war as well as the war being an unpopular war. Never at any time nor since have men and women of the military been treated so badly because of the unpopularity of this war.
President Diem persecuted the Viet Cong.
