Yes. Texas became a part of the United States of America on December 29, 1845. Prior to its statehood, Texas was its own country (yes, country) from 1836 to 1845, and was originally part of Mexico. New Mexico was founded on January 6, 1912. It became a state in order to be recognized as more than a territory.
