Yes, this has happened on several occasions. I recall that Pat Buchanan challenged Bush in 1992, that Ted Kennedy challenged Carter in 1980, that Reagan challenged Ford in 1976 and Eugene McCarthy and Bobby Kennedy challenged LBJ in 1968 so effectively that he dropped out of the race.

∙ 11y agoYes. It is not unusual for someone from his party to challenge an incumbent president for his party's nomination. It is rare for the challenger to win. but it happened in 1852 when Fillmore lost the nomination to Winfield Scott and in 1856 when Pierce lost the nomination to Buchanan. In 1968 Johnson was so seriously challenged by Eugene McCarthy and later by Robert Kennedy that he decided not to run again. Theodore Roosevelt ran against Taft in 1912 and failed to get the Republican nomination. Thereupon he formed his own third party to run again Taft in the November election.
Ted Kennedy ran against Carter in 1980 and Ronald Reagan ran again Ford in 1976 but neither was successful.
