Bronze Stars in the Viet War where awarded for both meritorious & valor. Obviously more meritorious Bronze Stars were handed out than the heroism ones. The Bronze Stars for valor MUST be awarded with a "V" device attached to them; on orders. These "V" devices REQUIRE a serious write up (a narrative justifying the medal). Just as all valor medals do (Silver Stars, Medal of Honor, etc.).

If this man was awarded the BS ask to see the write up. The certificate which accompanies the actual medal will actually state on it "with "V" device" and for "heroism." Or it will say for meritorious reasons. If the BS is for heroism a letter (orders) will accompany the medal certificate (for framing on the wall) this letter (orders) will actually "tell the story" of how the V device was earned.

Note: No orders, No medal (it didn't exist, doesn't exist, and will never exist).

What Women recevied bronze star in Vietnam?

In Vietnam, the Bronze Star was awarded for BOTH "Meritorious Achievement" and "Valor." If the medal was awarded for Valor it was designated to be accompanied by a brass/bronze metal "V" device. All women in the US military in Vietnam were either administrative personnel or medical nurses and they were not allowed near the front lines but operated in major base camps such as Quang Tri, Phu Bai, Da Nang, etc. They didn't operate at firebases, as a rule. US military women most assuredly were awarded Bronze Stars for Meritorious Achievements.
