over to Joshua, and was clearly not present when they began to conquer the

They had to rid all of Israel of the slave mentality and give the promised land to a new people who had learned to rely on the Lord.

No. Aaron died along with his generation in the desert before entering the promised land. His death is recorded in Deuteronomy 10:6.
Moses' death is clearly narrated at the end of Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the "old testament", toward the end of the 40 years' sojourn in the desert, and before the entrance into the promised land began. Sadly, Moses is not among the select few figures whose resurrection is told in the new-testament.
At some point during the 40-years' journey from Egypt to the promised land, Moses committed a sin so grave that he forfeited his right to enter the land, and was only permitted to view it from a high place east of the Jordan river before his death. The exact nature of his sin is a matter of debate. That is, although his actions are spelled out in detail in the Torah, there is no general agreement on exactly which of his actions was the fateful one, or why.

God told Joshua to be strong and courageous. This message was repeated multiple times to give Joshua confidence and assurance as he was about to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land after the death of Moses.
