Cosmetics were imported from China, India, Lebanon, Germany and Gaul, and were very expensive. Poor women used cheap cosmetics often did not have the time to apply them because it was time consuming and they needed to be applied several times a day due to the products being cheap.

Roman women put rouge on their checks because a light pink on the cheeks was seen as a sign good health and attractive, even though rich women liked to be fair skinned. They used vermillion from Tyre (in Lebanon) red chalk, alkanet, rose and poppy petals, focus (algae), and crocodile dung. Red ochre imported from Belgium was more expensive. They used cinnabar and red lead extensively even though they knew that they were poisonous. Mulberry juice and wine dregs were cheap alternatives.

There is no evidence that Roman women used lipstick. Nails were painted with a red dye from an Indian insect. Only the wealthy cut their nails,

.

Rich Roman women liked to have fair skin to show that they belonged to the leisured class and did not get dark by working in the fields. When they went outdoors, they put oils on their faces. To whiten their skin they prepared beauty masks before putting their make up on. Before going to bed they applied sweat from sheep wool before going to bed. They bathed in donkey milk which acted as an exfoliant. This was very expensive. After a bath they put on chalk powder, white marl (lime-rich mud), crocodile dung, and white lead on their faces as whiteners. Beeswax, olive oil, rosewater, saffron, animal fat, tin oxide, starch, rocket, cucumber, anise, mushrooms, honey, rose leaves, poppies, myrrh, frankincense, almond oil, rosewater, lily root, water parsnip and eggs were also used as whiteners.

Other products which were used for beauty masks were juice, seeds, horns, excrement, honey, plants, placenta, marrow, vinegar, bile, animal urine, sulfur, vinegar, myrrh, incense, frankincense, ground oyster shells, onions with poultry fat, and barley with vetch (a type of broad bean); swans fat, donkey milk, gum Arabic and bean-meal were used for wrinkles; the ashes of snails were used for freckles and sores.
