No. From its earliest days on, Australia has always worked to control and regulate possession of private guns. Today, you can only have a gun if you have gotten a license for it first. One of the requirements is that you must have 'a genuine reason' for wanting to own a gun. Just stating that you want to protect yourself or your home and family is NOT a good enough reason. Automatic rifles for private use have been totally banned for almost a century. And even if the authorities decide to issue a license (for one gun only, of course) the local police is notified if you actually use it to buy one. Strict gun control is widely supported by the Australian public.
As a result, armed crime has been steadily going down for the last 25 years and people possessing guns are mostly members of shooting clubs or licensed hunters. Most of the guns in private possession are in consequence 'longarms' for hunting or target practice; handguns are only a small percentage of private guns.
