It depends on the particular Nation of Islam preacher. Some were more bellicose than others (advocating for actual attacks on whites or restricting violence to self-defense), but the Nation of Islam was certainly not a mirror of Reverend King's peaceful non-violence.

It is important to note that the Nation of Islam is distinct from Sunni Islam in several key respects and the rules of the Nation of Islam are inconsistent with those of Sunni Islam.

The Nation of Islam is controversial because it is a racist (anti-White), anti-Semitic, homophobic organization. Note, however, that Nation of Islam is distinct from Sunni, Shiite, and Ibadi Islam. Read more about the Nation of Islam at the Related Link below.

Is the Nation of Islam violent?

The Nation of Islam is a African-American Islamic Organization. In the past, the Nation of Islam has advocated for violence against Whites, Jews, and Asians claiming that all of these people have repressed the "Black Interest" and should be "properly punished" for their conduct. Understandably, mainstream Sunni and Shiite Islam both condemned the Nation of Islam for these racial beliefs saying that Islam does not recognize any difference between people on the basis of race and that discrimination on such a basis is un-Islamic. With the death of the early Nation of Islam leaders, the Nation of Islam began an effort to reconcile its beliefs with Sunni Islam and is increasingly moving along that path, but there are still elements of the Nation of Islam that advocate for violence against non-Blacks. _______________________________________________________________ Nation of Islam (NOI) is not belonging to main stream Islam. Why is Islam a religion of violence?

Islam is never a violent religion. Islam calls for peace and justice and good morals. If Islam calls for defending your lands and properties (called military Jihad) it does not mean violence. If Islam calls Muslims to struggle within themselves to be in the right path of God and not to commit sins, it does not mean violence, Islam calls for peace and tolerance.
