The Nation of Islam is a African-American Islamic Organization. In the past, the Nation of Islam has advocated for violence against Whites, Jews, and Asians claiming that all of these people have repressed the "Black Interest" and should be "properly punished" for their conduct. Understandably, mainstream Sunni and Shiite Islam both condemned the Nation of Islam for these racial beliefs saying that Islam does not recognize any difference between people on the basis of race and that discrimination on such a basis is un-Islamic.

With the death of the early Nation of Islam leaders, the Nation of Islam began an effort to reconcile its beliefs with Sunni Islam and is increasingly moving along that path, but there are still elements of the Nation of Islam that advocate for violence against non-Blacks.

No, It is not even belonging to Muslims. The name as "Nation of Islam" or NOI is misleading. It gives the impression that they are representing the global gathering of Muslims as one nation. However, it is completely the opposite.

  • The basic and most principle of Islam (say the true Islam religion) is to witness that no God except one God (Allah) and that Muhammad is his prophet and messenger (and the last prophet). In this claimed Nation-of-Islam, they claim that Wallace D. Fard came as God incarnate (God is man).
  • In the true Islam religion, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is last God prophet and messenger. In this claimed Nation-of-Islam, they claim that Elijah Muhammad is God prophet to tell about God incarnation.

There are many other differences that confirms that this called NOI is not belonging to the true Islam religion and true Muslims.

The entire religion of Islam is often referred to by its adherents as one nation. This religion, composed of many sects, but especially the Sunni and Shiite sects is not a hate group.

However, the group 'Nation Of Islam' is a black separatist group, well known for its antisemitic, anti-White, and homophobic rhetoric. It is officially listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. See their description of the organization in the Related Link below.

Did the Nation of Islam believe in violence or non-violence?

It depends on the particular Nation of Islam preacher. Some were more bellicose than others (advocating for actual attacks on whites or restricting violence to self-defense), but the Nation of Islam was certainly not a mirror of Reverend King's peaceful non-violence.It is important to note that the Nation of Islam is distinct from Sunni Islam in several key respects and the rules of the Nation of Islam are inconsistent with those of Sunni Islam.
