Indochina
The Viet Minh were the communist forces led by Ho Chi Minh against the French during the 1st Indochina War (French Indochina War-1946 to 1954).
During WW2 Vietnam was a French protectorate and was named French Indochina.
WWII, it was called French Indochina then.
In 1954 (during the Cold War, 9 years after World War II ended), the French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu, a location in northeastern North Vietnam next to Laos. The French had been intending to regain French Indochina, the group of colonies that France had conquered back in the 1860s during the Imperialism Era, but Vietnamese Communists and Nationalists united to fend off the invading French. The French also decided to quit trying to regain Indochina because the French citizens started questioning whether this invasion was worth the lives and money that were costing the French. Ho Chi Minh (1890-1969) and other Vietnamese nationalists had founded the Vietminh (Independence League), and he was leading the partiallly-divided Vietnam at the time as a nationalist Communist.
