Adolf Hitler declared war on the U.S. a few days after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. It's hard to figure out why he decided to do this since there was almost no chance the U.S. would declare war on Germany for some time. An easy excuse is to say it was because Hitler was a maniac ( no arguments there ) but there are other reasons that historians bang around.
Despite the fact that Japan had not honored the agreements that bound the Axis powers together when Germany and Italy declared war on the Soviet Union, they felt obliged to declare war on the USA when Japan did. A move which made the Normandy landings and a rapid defeat possible.
Germany declared war on the US in reponse to Pearl Harbor. Germany was tied to Japan by the Tripartite Pact and desperately wanted a second front opened on the Russians (Soviets) to relieve the pressure on the German Armies on the Russian Front in Europe. Without a second Russian Front, the Soviets could (and did) transport Russian Troops from Eastern Russia to reinforce the European Front. It would be those same Eastern Russian Troops that would ultimately enter Berlin in 1945. Hitler knew military history; he knew that Japan had fought and defeated Russia during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. He also knew that Japan had fought a 3 month war with the Soviet Union at Nomonhan in 1939...and most likely knew that Japan had pretty well learned some hard lessons from that campaign. With those ideas in his mind, Hitler believed if Germany helped Japan fight the US...by declaring war on the US, then Japan might help Germany fight the Soviets. The German General Staff, reportedly remarked, concerning Germany's declaration of war against the US, "...what we needed was a stronger ally, NOT a stronger enemy!" Secondly, what Hitler either didn't want to believe, or didn't know, was Japan, having fought the Russians TWICE within 35 years, were loath to fighting them again.
