There are things that they both can do, but it depends on what you want to do as to which one you would decide to use. Excel has a much broader of range of things that it can do compared to Project. There are things that Project can do that you can make Excel do too, but because Project is designed to do certain things, it would be more specialised for then and it would be easier to do those things using Project. Project could be used to plan out the time of the project, how resources should be allocated, how long things will take and you could use Excel to work on the financial aspects of the project and other calculations, like the amount of materials to be needed.
