Magnesium deficiency is caused by not getting enough magnesium in the diet. It can also be depleted however by certain medications as well as processed foods and beverages.

Also, when there is an excess amount of calcium in the body (very common today given the misguided emphasis that has been placed solely on calcium in recent times), magnesium is excreted from the body further.

If you are looking at whether or not you have magnesium deficiency, the most noticeable indicator (besides going to your doctor) is muscle weakness, tremors, cramps, etc.

Beware, though, that true magnesium deficiency is rather uncommon in the developed world and its symptoms are much like those of many illnesses and other diseases.

Early signs of magnesium deficiency include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and weakness. As magnesium deficiency worsens, numbness, tingling, muscle contractions and cramps, seizures, personality changes, abnormal heart rhythms, and coronary spasms. Severe magnesium deficiency can result in low levels of calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia). Magnesium deficiency is also associated with low levels of potassium in the blood (hypokalemia).
