Remove the plastic engine covers. You will then see the coil packs. Unloosen the four screws, pull coil pack STRAIGHT OUT. Install is the reverse of removal.
both the 3100 and 3800 series engines have the ignition control module mounted under the coil packs. remove the coil packs and there it is.
There are no "position #'s" for the coils, the position numbers are for your cylinders, the coils can be interchangable, one fits all. Hope that helps.

I believe it has ( 2 ) because the ignition system is EDIS ( Electronic Distributorless Ignition System ) on the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer V8
no such thing... 6 or 8 individual ignition coils on top of the spark plugs wired directly to the computer...

Take off the plastic engine cover with the three or four bolts pending on which model, then remove the ignition coils and ignition coil plugs, and presto! you have access to all your spark plugs.
