If Your Speedometer it doesn't work, You have to take off the gauge panel and replace

the little motor. its easy to replace it. Get a new one or try to find it in a Junkyard.

This is a common problem in Honda Civic.

My '96 Civic DX speedo started to fluctuate wildly, acting more like a tachometer!

The vehicle alternator had failed, taking out fuse 15, which is up under the driver's footwell (LHD) and marked as VSS/Clock and rated at 7.5amps. This meant there was no 12v supply to the vehicle speed sensor, which is located on the back of the transaxle, viewed from the passenger side of the engine bay. The sensor was trying to draw current from anywhere it could and so created false engine malfunction codes, bringing on the check engine light. I replaced that blown fuse and all was well. It always pays to check the obvious/simple stuff first.

If your speedo doesn't work and the engine is running ok, the first answer given above, will probably be valid.
