As a infantry soldier in the US Army who just returned from a 15 month deployment, I can honestly say that YES we do interact with the communities we are inhabiting and actually do more to help them then most know or believe. The primary reason we are out there every day risking our lives is actaully to protect these communities and help them solve the differences between each other. Most Americans and even Iraqis think we are just out there to destroy the country, to suck them dry of oil, etc. But from experience, I can say that a majority of our time was spent with leaders of the communities and the Iraqi army and police, helping them correct the problems in the area. Many of the terrorists there actually aren't out to hurt us as much as they are out to hurt their own people....So to answer your question, yes, we do...
