The thermostat is behind the alternator. Follow the bottom hose from the raiditor to the engine. In order to replace the thermostat alternator needs to be removed.

You'll need a 12 mm socket or wrench and a 14 mm wrench or socket to get to the bolts. Once that is acquired, the alternator should come right off. You'll need to go under the vehicle to gain access to the bottom bolt of the alternator. Replace the new one in reverse order.

the owners manul should say what to do. I would replace the alternator if you can't find anything its very simple. You need to find the alternator and then take off the screws. Make sure that you have a replacement first and that the spark wires are in the right order. Then replace the alternator by taking out the old one and putitng in the new one. Lastly just tighten the screws and your good to go. If the car hasn't been run for a while take out the spark plugs and spray some starting fluid in the cylinders , or spray some wd40 in the alternator when you replace it. You can also go to a mechanic and they'll know what to do.
Hello. I just replace the alternator on our 2001 Focus with 70K on the odometer. The job took about an hour. However, before you replace yours, check the continuity through the electrical plug connection at the alternator. This is a weak point of the Focus and can cause the alternator to not charge the battery properly. If the plug checks good, you must replace the entire alternator (as of 12-20-06, the part costs about $165 for a rebuilt unit in South Carolina). Here are the steps: Remove the positive battery cable. Unplug the wires from the alternator and slide them from the plastic support bracket. Connect a short extension onto a 3/8" ratchet and slide the end of the extension into the square hole on the belt tensioner. Rotate the ratchet handle so as to remove the tension from the belt. Slip the belt from the alternator only. Remove the two bolts from the front of the alternator and one nut from the underside of the alternator. Hint- To ease removal of the alternator, remove the electric fan housing from its mount by pushing on the two top tabs with your fingers. Lift up on the fan housing and slide it out of its lower supports. The housing can then be moved several inches out of the way to allow the alternator to be easily removed. Install the new alternator in the reverse order.

Not that difficult - everything is on the top of the engine. Take the serpentine belt off first, disconnect the wires and attach them to the new alternator in order. Then take the bolts out (they are obvious) and change the alternator - put the belt back on - that's usually the hardest part and your done.
